Building a safe, fair, and accountable gaming ecosystem

Creating a secure and welcoming digital environment is essential for the sustainable growth of the gaming industry. To ensure user well-being and foster trust, gaming platforms must implement robust controls and uphold the highest standards of ethics, transparency, and player safety.

Below is a comprehensive framework of Responsible Gaming Principles that gaming operators, developers, regulators, and stakeholders should work together to adopt:

1. Age-appropriate access

Strict enforcement of minimum age criteria based on game content and gameplay. Platforms must implement effective age verification mechanisms to prevent underage participation in games that are age-restricted.

2. Player privacy protection

Adopt stringent data protection practices, including minimal data collection, secure storage, and full compliance with applicable privacy laws. Personal information such as names, contact details, and addresses must be safeguarded at all times.

3. Playtime limits & break reminders

To curb gaming-related overuse, platforms should allow users to set playtime limits, issue periodic break reminders, and promote balanced engagement, especially among younger players.

4. Prevention of harassment & cyber bullying

Gaming platforms must implement moderation tools and reporting mechanisms to address harassment, abuse, or cyberbullying, particularly in multiplayer and chat-enabled environments.

5. Fraud prevention & detection

Employ multi-layered fraud checks and anti-cheating systems to detect suspicious activity and protect users from fraud, impersonation, or manipulative gameplay.

6. Identity verification

Introduce identity verification tools (such as e-KYC) to ensure users are who they claim to be. This measure is vital for both safety and compliance.

7. Grievance Redressal Mechanism

Establish a robust grievance redressal system that enables players to raise complaints and seek timely resolution of misconduct, unfair practices, or technical issues.

8. Fair Play, No Bots

Prohibit the use of AI bots or automated programs that give players unfair advantages. Platforms should monitor and penalise any form of foul play, especially in games involving real money.

9. Transparency in Outcomes

Publish verified records of gameplay results, win/loss ratios, payout proofs, and leaderboard standings to ensure transparency and build user trust.

10. Parental Control Tools

Provide easy-to-use parental control settings, including content filters, screen time limits, and account monitoring options, to allow guardians to supervise and manage their children’s gameplay.

11. Content Ethics – No Glorification of Crime

Games must not promote or normalise criminal, violent, or substance-related behaviour. Titles should align with social values and avoid any content that may negatively influence youth.

12. Financial Loss Limits & Wager Histories

Integrate tools that allow users to set deposit/spend limits, track financial activity, and receive real-time alerts about losses, ensuring transparency and responsible financial behaviour.

13. Self-Exclusion Features

Offer self-exclusion tools that let users take short or extended breaks from gaming. These features are vital to mitigating addictive behaviours and encouraging conscious gameplay.

14. Geo-Restrictions for National Security

Implement geolocation controls to monitor and restrict access to games from sensitive regions or by players posing national security risks. Games must be free from foreign propaganda or misuse.

15. Accountability of Developers & Publishers

All gaming companies must comply with Indian laws, collaborate with regulators and researchers, and accept responsibility for the content they produce. Working in alignment with ethical standards and government directives is essential.

16. Informed Decision-Making Tools

Gaming platforms should provide clear, accessible guidelines on gameplay, along with resources like toll-free helplines and toolkits to support informed, safe, and responsible gaming choices.

17. Ethical Advertising Practices

Follow socially responsible advertising codes. Avoid targeting or featuring minors in ads and ensure compliance with all relevant advertising standards and legal frameworks.

18. Financial Literacy in Gaming

Encourage players to set realistic budgets and avoid treating gaming as a source of income. In-app messages should educate users about the risks of excessive spending and financial over-dependence.

19. Funding for Responsible Gaming Research

Advocate for the allocation of funds to support academic and policy research focused on responsible gaming, addiction prevention, and behavioural impacts of gaming.

20. Employee Training & Internal Culture

All employees involved in game development and operations must receive regular training on responsible gaming practices to ensure the company’s internal culture aligns with user safety and ethics.

At Youth for Responsible Gaming (YRG), we believe the future of gaming in India must be not only innovative and immersive but also inclusive, safe, and socially responsible. Through partnerships with platforms, regulators, institutions, and young stakeholders, we aim to make this framework a standard across the industry.
